Socrates Café was the idea of Christopher Phillips, the author of "Socrates Café" and co-founder of the Society of Philosophical Inquiry located at http://www.philosopher.org . He was a freelance journalist who became disenchanted with a routine lifestyle and followed his passions of bringing philosophy to the everyday individual. He began holding Socrates Café Meetings in New Jersey which eventually spread throughout the United States and serves as a medium for discourse to take place in communities throughout the country.

The first Socrates Café meeting held in Idaho was started by Scott Harris on August 19th 2008. There are now approximately 22 regular attendees of the meetings whose demographics extend from 20 years of age to 64 years of age. We have an international mix of individuals as well as a fairly even split between males and females. The beauty of the group lies in its diversity which spans various multi-cultural differences, experiential backgrounds, and social bias.

Why should anyone care about Socrates Cafés? Not everyone does. Though there are many definitions of Philosophy, it can be fairly stated that anyone who has an interest about the world around them and a thirst for higher knowledge, there lays a natural born philosopher. Philosophy is not confined to the college graduate, or to the "highly intellectual" persons who seem to know a lot about everything.

If you are interested in good conversation, are intrigued in opinions that differ from your own, and can engage in respectful dialogue, then welcome to Socrates Café...
